SASSA R350 Grant Payments: Making Progress

Press Release: 18th July, 2022

By the end of the week, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) expects to have paid more than a million recipients of the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant.

SASSA claimed to have already paid 750 000 grant applicants in a statement on Friday.

SASSA explained that the payments issued this week were exclusively for the reconsideration appeals for the months of August and November 2021.

In order for the payments to be deposited, the agency requested beneficiaries to give their bank account information.

Clients whose reconsideration appeals were successful but whose bank account information was still incomplete received notifications to amend details, SASSA continued.

For failing to make the grants’ April and May payments to more than 10 million South Africans who depended on them during the Covid-19 outbreak, the organization has come under criticism.

When the payments for the remaining two months will be made were not specified in any detail.

But the organization said that it has started reviewing fresh funding requests.

SASSA had intended to make the grant payment this week that the government had extended in February.

However, the Department of Social Development put in place a means test to make sure that persons with an income of R350 or more do not get the grant, which caused the payments to be delayed.

The SASSA had to enter into new contracts with banks in order for them to examine the recipients’ bank accounts as a result of the means test.

In its statement, SASSA also mentioned that once the Covid-19 National State of Disaster was removed, legislative adjustments were required in order for the grant to be renewed.

In order to guarantee that we keep within the budget allocation of R44 billion, the agency stated that one of the requirements of the allocations in the new iterations was to address concerns made concerning inclusion and exclusion issues.

SASSA added that the means test applies to all applicants, not only those filing appeals.

“This necessitates the implementation of a comparable method of examining people’s bank accounts for income by SASSA.

Previously, only those who had appealed received this treatment.

This is currently in place for all Covid-19 SRD funding applications submitted upfront “SASSA stated.
